(9) Women's Lacrosse rolls to 20-goal win over University of St. Mary

Benedictine Women's Lacrosse earned their second home win on Wednesday afternoon, taking out the University of St. Mary 23-3 on Legacy Field.

The No. 9-ranked Ravens reached the 10-goal margin with 7:52 remaining in the first quarter and never looked back en route to the 20-goal win over the Spires.

It took Benedictine 27 seconds to score their first goal as Alexa Hildenbrand – the reigning Heart Offensive Player of the Week – connected with Kiera Russell. Elizabeth Piuta scored an unassisted goal with 7:52 remaining in the first quarter to push the Ravens lead to 10-0 and kick in the mercy rule and running clock.

By the end of the first quarter, the Ravens pushed their lead to 13-1, giving up a last-minute goal from USM. They added 6 more goals in the second quarter while yielding a second goal to the Spires to make a 19-1 lead into halftime.

The second half saw little scoring as Benedictine worked the clock offensively while limiting USM on the defensive end. After getting off 2 shots over the first two quarters, the Spires managed 5 total in the second half as Benedictine finished the game with a 33-7 advantage.

Molly Owen earned the win in goal, playing the first half while Monica Klecan saw her first minutes in goal in the second half, recording 3 saves.

USM turned the ball over 21 times with Benedictine recording 11 caused turnovers. Pluta and Haylee Strough led the way with 2 caused turnovers each. Strough led the team with 5 ground balls while Russell led the team with 8 draw controls. Strough added 6 draw controls while Margaux Gelbach finished with 5.

Offensively, Chanterra Allen led the Ravens with 4 goals as 11 players tallied at least one goal. Hildenbrand joined Russell, Pluta, and Strough with 3 goals each.
