Mount Mercy takes Heart road series from Baseball

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Benedictine Baseball traveled to Mount Mercy University for its first Heart road series on Sunday and Monday. The Mustangs took the series with a pair of wins 5-1 and 7-1 on Sunday and then wrapped up the series sweep on Monday with wins of 6-5 and 6-4.

Game 1: Mount Mercy 5, Benedictine 1
Benedictine was limited to three hits as the Mustangs opened the series with a four-run win on Sunday.

Lance Bolles suffered the loss on the hill for the Ravens, giving up 5 runs off 8 hits with 5 strikeouts before Andrew Baier shutout the Mustangs in a hitless appearance in the sixth inning.

Brylan Haas went 2 for 4 at the plate for the Ravens, driving in the lone during the third inning. Jack Harpole added the Ravens third hit.

Game 2: Mount Mercy 7, Benedictine 4
A three-run fourth inning proved to be the difference in the second game of the series as each team matched the other with 10 hits.

Ben DeLaForest suffered the loss on the hill, throwing the first four innings. He allowed 3 earned runs off 7 hits with 3 strikeouts in the loss.

Dominic Ferrari anchored the Ravens at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a home run, double, 2 runs scored, and an RBI. Harpole added a home run and 2 RBI while Rhett Spell added a sac fly RBI. Jack Minnis went 3 for 4, scoring 1 run.

Game 3: Mount Mercy 6, Benedictine 5
The Mustangs scored 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the series win in the first game on Sunday.

After giving up 4 runs in the bottom of the first Jackson Sarver took over for Ethan Arnold and held the Mustangs scoreless until the seventh. Sarver went six and one-third innings, giving up 2 runs off 3 hits with 4 strikeouts in the loss.

Five of the Ravens nine hits in the game were for extra bases. Harpole and Brice Martin each finished a home runs while Hunter Moffet, Ashton Neuman and Minnis added doubles. Harpole recorded 3 RBI while Martin added 2. 

Game 4: Mount Mercy 6, Benedictine 4
A four-run third inning made the difference in the series finale as the Ravens were limited to just two runs over the first six innings of the game.

Ben Bowman suffered the loss for the Ravens on the hill. He threw the first two and two-thirds innings, giving up 5 runs off 4 hits with 5 strikeouts. 

Benedictine scored its four runs off five hits at the plate. Neuman went 2 for 4 moving up to the lead-off spot in the order. He recorded a double, home run and finished with 2 RBI. Moffet and Haas added an RBI each to round out the Ravens offensive efforts.

The Ravens return home for their next Heart series, hosting Park University on Laughlin Field at Olsen Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch both days is scheduled for Noon. Saturday, the Ravens will celebrate Community Appreciation Day as they recognize the Atchison Mudcats baseball team who earned a State Championship this past year.
