Game Recap: Softball |

Ravens Softball sweeps Morningside to reach 20 wins

Ravens Softball pushed their win total to 20 with a sweep of the Morningside Mustangs at home Sunday afternoon.

The Ravens took the first game by a final of 5-1, then finished up the sweep with a 5-3 win to cap off the day.

Game 1

The Ravens picked up the win behind another strong start by pitcher Bailey Selvage. The sophomore struck out 11 batters and allowed just 1 run in a complete game effort, earning her 10th win of the season. It was the fifth time this season Selvage struck out double-digit batters.

Offensively, the Ravens plated a run in the second and fifth inning before adding 3 insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Chloe Strickland had 2 hits, including a double, and scored the opening run of the game. Kassidy James had a hit and drove in a pair of runners in the sixth as the Ravens won the opening game of the doubleheader, 5-1.

Game 2

The Ravens fell behind 3-0 early in the second game as Lily SinghDhillon pitched the first three innings and gave up 3 runs, but none of which were earned. Lacey Foster came in relief of SinghDhillon, pitching a scoreless final 4 innings, which allowed the Ravens bats to get to work.

Natalie Sheffield plated the first Ravens run of the game when she singled home Baylee Knorr in the bottom of the third inning.

Rhiannon Martin fired the next shot, a solo homer to lead off the fourth inning. Later in the fourth, Ryan Cooper scored on a Morningside error to level the game, 3-3.

The Ravens took the lead in the fifth as Clare Heitz scored on Sheffield's triple. Sheffield, who had 3 hits in the game, then scored on a fielder's choice to give the Ravens a 2-run cushion.

That turned out to be more than enough for Foster as she pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning and then worked around a leadoff single in the seventh inning to close out the win and pick up her third win of the season.

The Ravens (20-4) will open Heart of America play at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 23 at home against William Penn University.
