SAVANNAH, Ga. – No. 3 seed Lawrence Tech used an 8-goal second quarter to seize the momentum from No. 6 seed Benedictine Women's Lacrosse on Wednesday en route to a 16-11 win in the first round of the Fourth annual NAIA Women's Lacrosse National Championship.
The Ravens jumped out to an early lead on goals from Kaylen Moore, Chanterra Allen, and Elizabeth Pluta. They built their lead to 6-1 inside the first five minutes of the second quarter before the Blue Devils 8 straight to take over offensive momentum and the lead, 9-6.
Allen's goal gave her 90 on the year, moving her into the top spot on the Ravens single-season list for goals.
Moore added her third goal of the first half inside the final 90 seconds of the second quarter to cut the Ravens deficit back down to two goals, 9-7, headed into halftime.
The two teams combined for 4 third-quarter goals before Benedictine opened the fourth quarter with goals from Pluta and Moore. Pluta scored twice with Moore's final goal between to make it 12-11 Lawrence Tech with just over 10 minutes remaining.
The Blue Devils held the Ravens scoreless over the final 10 minutes of the game to secure the win.
Moore led the Ravens with 5 goals and an assist. Pluta added 3 goals, followed by Allen with 2 goals and 2 assists. Marguax Gelbach added one assist to round out the Ravens offensive efforts.
Defensively, Molly Owen finished the game with 10 saves in goal. Kiera Russell led the ravens with 4 caused turnovers and 6 ground balls. Gelbach finished with 6 draw controls while
Benedictine finishes the year at 13-4 and making their fourth straight appearance in the NAIA National Championship.
