CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – No. 22-ranked and three-seeded Benedictine Softball took care of their hosts on Friday afternoon at the Heart Softball Championship Tournament.
Delayed a day by Mother Nature, the Ravens beat six-seeded Mount Mercy University on Friday afternoon 4-1 to advance to the second round of tournament play on Saturday.
Benedictine opened with a solo home run from Baylee Knorr in the first and then followed that up with a two-run single from Abby Pressgrove in the second to take a 3-0 lead over the Mustangs. Knorr tacked on a second RBI on a sacrifice fly in the second and that was all the run support that Bailey Selvage would need.
Selvage improved to 19-4 on the season with a complete-game effort inside the circle. She finished with two strikeouts, limiting the Mustangs to just 1 run off 6 hits over 7 innings.
Benedictine advances to game 8 of the Heart Championship Tournament at 9:30 a.m. Saturday where they will take on the seven-seeded Missouri Valley College Vikings. The Vikings advanced to Saturday with a 5-4 upset over two-seeded Baker University in game 3 of the Championship earlier on Friday morning.
