Benedictine Baseball returned to Laughlin Field at Olsen Stadium for a 4-game series with Viterbo University on Sunday and Monday.
The two teams split both doubleheaders with Sunday's split 4-3 Viterbo and 8-7 Benedictine. Monday afternoon, the V-Hawks earned an 8-2 win before the Ravens rallied for a 9-0 win in the series finale.
Viterbo 4, Benedictine 3
Viterbo scored a run in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and earn the opening win of the series.
The two teams matched each other run-for-run through six innings as they each scored in the second, fifth, and sixth innings. Charlie Elsten was saddled with the loss, throwing two-thirds of an inning in relief.
Lance Bolles earned the start on the hill. He went 4 and a third innings, giving up 2 runs off 6 hits with 4 strikeouts before the Ravens used 4 additional pitchers to finish out the game. Avery Baber and Nolan Haas bridged the gap to Elsten, holding the V-Hawks scoreless over a combined inning and a third. Evan DeMint finished off the final two-thirds of an inning after Elsten, finishing with 2 strikeouts.
At the plate, Brice Martin recorded a double, and Brylan Haas finished with a triple. Carson Hintz, Chase Robertson, and Michael McCavitt were all credited with an RBI.
Benedictine 8, Viterbo 7
Brylan Haas singled in Miles Holmquist in the bottom of the seventh to give the Ravens a walk-off win in game two of the series.
Viterbo looked to be headed to a sweep to open the series, scoring 6 runs in the fifth before Benedictine answered with a run in the sixth to send the game into the seventh tied.
Ryan Jackson earned the win in relief. He threw the final 2 innings, striking out two while holding the V-Hawks scoreless. Scott Matzke earned the start and threw 4 innings with 4 strikeouts while giving up 5 runs off 8 hits. Zach Wilcox bridged the gap between Matzke and Jackson, giving up 2 runs off a hit with a strikeout in one inning of work.
Carson Hintz recorded two home runs at the plate with 4 RBI. Dominic Ferrari added a double while Brylan Haas added a double and 3 RBI. Brice Martin also recorded an RBI in the win.
Viterbo 8, Benedictine 2
The V-Hawks took the series lead over the Ravens with a win to open up Monday's doubleheader. They broke the game open with a 6-run fifth inning while holding Benedictine to just 2 runs off 2 hits.
Nic Mozingo suffered the loss, throwing 4 innings. Avery Baber, Evan DeMint, Charlie Elsten, and Johnny Andrews finished off the game in relief of Mozingo.
Both of Benedictine's hits were doubles from Brice Martin and Miles Holmquist. Carson Hintz and Matthew Johnson were credited with an RBI each.
Benedictine 9, Viterbo 0
Ben Bowman picked up a shutout win in the series finally, as the Ravens rallied behind a strong outing on the hill.
Bowman picked up the win, scattering 2 hits across 5 innings with 4 strikeouts before Nolan Haas finished off the shutout with 2 strikeouts over 2 innings of relief.
The Ravens finished with 11 hits at the plate getting doubles from Brice Martin, Carson Hintz, and Matthew Gabriel. JK Sparks recorded a home run while adding 3 RBI. Hintz and Dominic Ferrari added 2 RBI while Chase Robertson and Matthew Johnson added an RBI each.
Benedictine will open their Heart schedule at Olsen Stadium on Saturday and Sunday as the series, originally scheduled to be played at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo., is being moved to Benedictine's campus because of field conditions with Missouri Valley's home field.
