Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Big second half propels Women's Basketball to Heart Semifinals

Women's Basketball used a strong second-half to advance in the Heart Women's Basketball Postseason Championship Tournament Tuesday night.

The No. 3 seed Ravens defeated the No. 6 seed Park University Pirates, 77-52, in the quarterfinals.

The game's momentum changed in the second half as the Ravens found their offensive rhythm after trailing by 5 points at halftime. Lauryn Dubbert hit a couple of baskets early, then  Riley Bruggeman drove into the paint for a basket and followed that up with a 3-pointer to give the Ravens a 40-37 lead – their first since early in the second quarter.

Those two baskets started a 12-0 run by the Ravens that turned a 2-point deficit into a 10-point lead. By the end of the third quarter, the Ravens held a 52-39 lead, outscoring the Pirates 25-7 in the third quarter.

The onslaught continued in the fourth quarter as the Ravens pushed their lead to as many as 26 points before closing out the game with the 25-point win.

Dubbert finished with a game-high 18 points and added 7 assists and 4 steals. Bruggeman was a lightning rod off the bench, scoring 16 points. Josie Weishaar and Jennifer Jacobs both scored 13 points, with Weishaar finishing with 6 rebounds and Jacobs picking up a double-double by securing 10 boards. Kennedy Nicholson scored 7 points and dished out 6 assists.

The Ravens held a 16-14 lead after a quarter of play, but an offensive slump put them behind in the second quarter. The Pirates opened the second quarter on an 11-0 run and it wasn't until Bruggeman's 3-pointer five minutes into the period that the Ravens scored their first points. It was also the Ravens first made 3-pointer of the game.

The Bruggeman basket kick-started an 11-3 run by the Ravens as they got within 1 point of the Pirates, but Park closed out the first half with a 32-27 lead. The Ravens answered in the second half to run away with the game.

The Ravens (22-7) will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to take on No. 2 seed Grand View on Friday in the semifinals. The Ravens and Vikings split their regular season matchups, with each team winning on the opponent's home floor.
