Baseball splits Heart series with Baker

After picking up a sweep of Friday's doubleheader on Laughlin Field at Olsen Stadium, Benedictine Baseball earned a series split on Saturday as Baker University swept the final two games of the Heart series.

Benedictine opened the series with wins of 9-6 and 5-2 on Friday, and then Baker closed the series with wins of 4-2 and 7-4 on Saturday.

Lance Bolles was the beneficiary of 9 extra-base hits from the Ravens in the series opener. He earned the win on the hill for Benedictine, throwing 6.1 innings. Bolles gave up 3 earned runs off 8 hits before he gave way to Ryan Jackson, who finished off the final two outs of the seventh inning with two strikeouts.

Six Ravens finished with at least 2 hits at the plate. Carson Hintz went 3 for 3 with a double, a run scored, and 2 RBI. Cooper Milroy added 2 doubles while Bryan Haas, Skyler Specht, and Benson Smith finished with a double each. Dominic Ferrari, JK Sparks, and Smith recorded home runs as Ferrari and Sparks joined Hintz with 2 RBI each. Smith and Milroy also added an RBI each to round out the series-opening win.

In Friday's finale, the Ravens limited the Wildcats to just 2 runs off 7 hits as Scott Matzke and Ryan Jackson combined on the hill. Matzke went 4.2 innings, giving up 1 run off 5 hits with 3 strikeouts to earn the win. Jackson threw the final 2.1 innings with 3 strikeouts to earn the save.

The Ravens finished game two with three extra-base hits. Specht went 2 for 3 with a double, a home run, and 3 RBI. Hintz went 2 for 3 with a triple and 2 RBI.

Sunday, the Ravens faced off against the Wildcats all-conference pitcher Caden Pogue in the third game of the series. Pogue earned the win in his second start of the season as he is coming off an injury. He went all 7 innings, holding the Ravens to just 2 runs off 5 hits.

Avery Baber had a strong start for the Ravens on the hill. He went 3.2 innings, giving up 1 earned run off 4 hits with 4 strikeouts to earn a no-decision. Nolan Haas suffered the loss, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits over his 3.1 innings.

Two of the Ravens 5 hits were for extra bases, and Specht connected on a 2-run home run in the second inning. Hintz added a double to round out the Ravens offensive efforts.

In the series finale on Saturday, the Ravens rallied to score the last 3 runs of the game, but couldn't capitalize in the seventh inning to cap off the comeback.

Michael McCavitt hit a home run for the Ravens while Ferrari added a 2-RBI double. Sparks added a fourth RBI to round out the Ravens series at the plate.

Nic Mozingo suffered the loss, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits over the first two innings. Evan DeMint, Zach Wilcox, Charlie Elsten, and Jackson combined to finish the game for the Ravens on the hill. Wilcox and Jackson held the Wildcats scoreless while DeMint and Elsten allowed a combined 3 runs.

Benedictine hits the road for their next Heart series. They will travel to Oskaloosa, Iowa, on April 5-6 for a four-game series with William Penn University.
