Baseball earns series win over William Penn

OSKALOOSA, Iowa – Benedictine Baseball won its 4-game series over William Penn University over the weekend, sweeping the Statesmen on Saturday and then earning a split on Sunday.

Saturday, the Ravens opened the series with a 7-4 win and then won 3-0 in 8 innings. Sunday, the Statesmen took game three 7-4 before the Ravens earned the series win with a 7-5 in 8 innings.

Lance Bolles earned the win on the hill in the opener on Saturday. He threw a complete game, giving up 4 runs off 9 hits with 7 strikeouts.

Brice Martin and Matthew Johnson led the Ravens at the plate with 2 doubles each, while Dominic Ferrari added a fifth double. Marin was joined by JK Sparks and Carson Hintz with 2 RBI each, while Johnson added an RBI of his own.

In game two, the Ravens scored 3 runs in the top of the eighth and held on for the win behind a complete game from Scott Mazke on the hill.

Matzke went 8 innings in the win, holding the Statesmen scoreless off 3 hits with 2 strikeouts. 

Martin and Sparks were credited with an RBI each as Martin, Hintz, Ferrari, Sparks, Johnson, Skyler Specht, and Cooper Milroy recorded the Ravens 7 hits at the plate.

In game three of the series, the Ravens gave up 3 runs in the fifth inning to break a 4-4 tie as the Statesmen earned their first win of the series.

Avery Baber threw the first 3 innings, giving up 4 runs off 9 hits, before Ryan Jackson threw the next 2 innings. He allowed 3 runs off 3 hits with 3 strikeouts to suffer the loss.

Brylan Haas and Johnson each recorded 2 hits at the plate while Specht finished with a double. Specht was joined by Martin, Sparks and Milroy with an RBI each.

Benedictine scored 2 runs in the top of the eighth in the series finale to break a 5-5 tie after scoring 3 runs in the fourth to tie the game up at 5.

Jackson earned the win for the Ravens on the hill. He threw the final 4.1 innings after Zach Wilcox, Nolan Haas and Nic Mozingo threw the first 3.2 innings. Jackson held the Statesmen scoreless off 3 hits with 5 strikeouts.

The Ravens finished the game with two extra-base hits as Ferrari finished with a triple and an RBI. Brylan Haas added a double and 2 RBI while Milroy added an RBI.

Benedictine hosts Peru State College on Saturday and Sunday for a four-game conference series. Saturday's doubleheader marks the annual Play Catch with Mom before game one of the series, while Sunday, the program will celebrate their annual Military & First Responders Day.
