DES MOINES – Top-ranked Grand View University won the turnover battle on Saturday afternoon as they held off upset-minded Benedictine Football in the second Heart-UEN Clash of the Week.
The No. 4-ranked Ravens outscored the Vikings 17-13 in the second half, but couldn't overcome the 14 points that Grand View scored off 2 of the Ravens 3 turnovers as Grand View earned a 27-24 win.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Vikings found the end zone twice in the second quarter before Benedictine scored on a 1-yard rush from Xavier Ugorgi with 9 seconds left in the half to head to the locker room up 14-7.
Christian Klobe connected on a 29-yard field goal for Benedictine's only points of the third quarter before Grand View extended their advantage to 21-10 headed into the fourth quarter.
Benedictine limited Grand View to a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter while scoring on a pair of passing touchdowns of their own. Jackson Dooley connected on two touchdown passes to Tanner Zimmerman in the fourth quarter of 60 yards and 6 yards – the second of which came with just over 1 minute left in the game and pulled the Ravens within 3 points.
The Ravens finished with a total of 436 total yards on offense, while the Vikings finished with 303. Dooley went 24 of 39 for 324 yards but finished with 2 interceptions to go along with his 2 touchdowns. Zimmerman finished with 97 yards on 5 receptions as the Ravens spread the ball around again with 11 Ravens recorded at least 1 reception. Ugorgi finished with 66 yards rushing on 17 carries as Benedictine finished with 112 yards on the ground.
Defensively, Trey Williams led the Ravens with 7 tackles. Isaac Lopez, Dylan Witherspoon and Jason Anderson added 6 tackles each.
Benedictine returns home on Saturday to celebrate their annual Stars & Stripes Day at 1 p.m. against Graceland University. Graceland opened its season on Saturday with a 71-28 win over William Woods University.
