Benedictine Baseball opened its season on Sunday and Monday with a four-game split against the Warriors of Waldorf University.
Sunday, the Ravens dropped the opening 7-6 before rallying to take game 2, 14-4. Monday, they opened with an 8-7 win before suffering a 3-0 loss in the series finale.
Game 1: Waldorf 7, Benedictine 6.
Parish Beagle earned the start on the hill, and was credited with a no-decision in the loss. He threw 3.1 innings, giving up 3 earned runs off 8 hits with 5 strikeouts.
Anthony Sanders suffered the loss, allowing the go-ahead runs to score in a third of an inning in relief before Nolan Haas and Ryan Jackson shutdown the Warriors over the final 3.1 innings.
The Ravens scored 6 runs off 9 hits at the plate. Carson Hintz hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first. JK Sparks, and Michael McCavitt joined Hintz with a two-hit game at the plate while Brylan Haas joined McCavitt with 2 RBI each.
Game 2: Benedictine 14, Waldorf 4
Benedictine broke the game open with a 9-run fourth inning en route to their first win of the season.
Scott Matzke earned the win, going 4 innings and going up 2 earned runs off 7 hits with 4 strikeouts before Nick Bauer and Ethan Arnold shut the door over the final 3 innings.
Brice Martin finished the game going 3 for 4 at the plate with a double and 4 RBI. Brylan Haas added 2 doubles and 3 RBI while Matthew Johnson went 2 for 2 with a double. Korey Messick and Hintz added 2 RBI each to round out the Ravens offensive efforts.
Game 3: Benedictine 8, Waldorf 7.
Nic Mozingo gave the Ravens a solid start to open play on Monday, throwing 4 innings to earn the win.
Benedictine finished with 8 hits at the plate in support of Mozingo, Nolan Haas and Jackson as Jackson threw the final 2 innings to earn his first save of the season.Â
Martin continued to anchor the Ravens offense, adding 2 doubles and 4 RBI. McCavitt hit his first home run of the season while Oliver Ferris finished with a double and RBI.
Game 4: Waldorf 3, Benedictine 0.
Waldorf was able to hold Benedictine to just 3 hits over 7 innings as they shutout the Ravens to even the series in game two on Monday.
Lance Bolles opened the game for the Ravens, throwing the first 2 innings, giving up 1 run off 3 hits to suffer the loss. Ryan McDougal took over in the third to hold the Warriors scoreless into the seventh. Eli Reeves finished off the game, allowing 2 runs off 2 hits.
McCavitt recorded a double as he was joined by Jackson Stone and Johnson with the Ravens 3 hits at the plate.
With today's game getting rescheduled from Saturday, the Ravens return to Olsen Stadium on Saturday to take on Calvary University at Noon. The two teams were originally scheduled to play a four-game series starting on Friday, but due to the doubleheader today, Friday's doubleheader has been canceled so that the team won't miss the same set of classes twice in one week.
