Women's Basketball earned a trip to the Heart Championship game Saturday afternoon.
The No. 2 seed Ravens defeated the No. 3 seed Grand View University Vikings, 70-46 in the semifinals in Atchison, their second win against the Vikings this season.
The Ravens held an 18-15 lead after one quarter of play but really picked things up in the second quarter. A 17-0 run over 3 minutes of action put the Ravens in control, 42-19.
Defense and ball movement on the offensive end were crucial during the Ravens run.
Makayla Baughman and
Riley Bruggeman started the scoring streak with baskets immediately following Grand View turnovers. Bruggeman and Deters added back-to-back 3-pointers, then
Kyla Fitzgerald scored on a great look inside from Deters. Baughman's 3-pointer on an assist from
Nicole Storck put an exclamation point on the run as the Ravens took a 23-point lead, and eventually took a 45-21 lead into the halftime break.
The Ravens forced 12 Vikings turnovers in the first half, and on the offensive end they dished out 17 assists on 18 baskets.
Neither team was able to find a strong offensive rhythm in the third quarter, with the Vikings outscoring the Ravens 12-11. The biggest issue for the Ravens were turnovers – after turning over the ball just 3 times in the opening 20 minutes, the Ravens had 8 turnovers in the third quarter. Still, the Ravens took a 56-33 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Ravens never let Grand View get momentum for a comeback in the fourth quarter, securing the 24-point win.Â
Bruggeman and Baughman each scored 14 points to lead the Ravens, and Fitzgerald added 11 points. The Ravens outrebounded the Vikings 45-33 as Bruggeman and Storck each grabbed 9 boards. Deters had 7 points and 9 assists, and Bruggeman swiped 6 steals as the Vikings had 16 turnovers.
The Ravens finished the game with 26 assists on 28 baskets, constantly finding the open player for a shot.
The Ravens (24-6) now await the winner of the No. 1 MidAmerica Nazarene University vs No. 4 Culver-Stockton game, scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday evening. An MNU win would send the Ravens to Olathe for the Heart Tournament Championship game on Tuesday, March 3, but a Culver-Stockton win would allow the Ravens to host the game on Tuesday.
