Baseball salvages final game of Baker series with 5-0 win

BALDWIN CITY – Benedictine Baseball salvaged game four of the Heart Series of the Week on Sunday, taking the series finale over Baker University 5-0.

The Wildcats took the series over the Ravens winning 3-0 and 6-1 on Saturday before taking game three 2-1 on Sunday before the Ravens win in game four.

The Ravens were sparked at the plate in the final game of the series by Carson Hintz. Hintz went 3 for 4 with a pair of home runs and four RBI. Elijah Reeves, Brice Martin and JK Sparks joined Hintz with a multi-hit game as Reeves went 2 for 4, Martin went 3 for 4 and Sparks went 2 for 4.

The 5 runs came in support of Ryan McDougal and Ryan Jackson. McDougal went 4.2 innings, holding Baker scoreless off 1 hit with 11 strikeouts before Jackson closed the door with 2.1 hitless innings with 4 more strikeouts.

Game 1: Baker 3, Benedictine 0
The Ravens were limited to 5 hits with Hintz recording a double in the series opener. 

Parish Beagle suffered the loss, throwing the first 3.1 innings, giving up 3 runs off 5 hits before Jackson finished off the game, holding Baker scoreless off 2 hits with 4 strikeouts. 

Game 2: Baker 6, Benedictine 1
Nic Mozingo gave up 2 earned runs off 6 hits over 5 innings to suffer the loss in the second game on Saturday. He finished with 4 strikeouts before Ben Bowman finished off the game with 2 strikeouts while holding the Wildcats hitless.

Benedictine's lone run on the first day of the series came on a solo home run from Hintz as he went 2 for 3. Reeves also went 2 for 3 in the loss.

Game 3: Baker 2, Benedictine 1
The Ravens were held to 2 hits in the first game on Sunday.

On the hill, Scott Matzke suffered his first loss of the season, throwing 4.2 innings while allowing 2 runs off 6 hits with 4 strikeouts before Ethan Arnold went the final 1.1 innings, holding the Wildcats hitless with a strikeout.

Both of the Ravens hits in the loss were doubles off the bats of Reeves and Martin as Martin recorded the lone RBI on the run scored by Reeves.

Benedictine remains on the road, traveling to St. Louis on Wednesday and Thursday for a four-game Heart series against No. 8 Missouri Baptist University. Both doubleheaders are scheduled are scheduled for Noon from Spartan Baseball Field.
