BELLEVUE, Neb. – Benedictine Volleyball went 3-1 on the weekend, capping off their four-match appearance in the Bruin Classic, beating host, and No. 8-ranked Bellevue University.
The Ravens opened up the Classic with a 3-1 win over Xavier University of Louisiana before falling 3-1 to Valley City State (ND). They picked up a pair of sweeps on Saturday, beating Benedictine-Mesa in the third match before knocking off Bellevue.
Benedictine 3, XULA 1 – 25–21, 25–18, (25-21), 25–14
Benedictine opened play on Friday morning, hitting .275 with a total of 54 kills en route to their win. The Ravens bounced back from a third-set loss, hitting .350 with 16 kills to seal the win.
Stefania Scomazzon led the attack with 15 kills, hitting .294 and adding three aces. Barbara Terra added 14 kills, while JoJo Vander Woude 11 kills. Wren VanCleave tallied 43 assists while also producing a team-high 18 digs. Isabella Franco rounded out the top performers with 4 of Benedictine's 10 aces.
Valley City State 3, Benedictine 1 – 25-16, (21-25), 25-22, 25-22
Benedictine dropped it second match of the Classic on Friday afternoon. After rallying to pull even with a 25-21 win in the second set, Valley City State won the third and fourth set by scores of 25-22.
The Ravens finished with a .212 attack percentage, outhitting Valley City State. The also finished with the advantage at end net defensively, ending the match with a 9-5 advantage in blocks.
Scomazzon again led Benedictine with 16 kills, while Terra added 13 and Vander Woude had 10. VanCleave recorded 46 assists, and Kelly DeMeulenaere anchored the back row with 22 digs. Vander Woude led the blocking effort with four blocks, while VanCleave and Terra each added 3 each
Benedictine 3, Benedictine-Mesa 0 – 25–13, 25–15, 25–16
In the battle of Benedictine's Saturday morning, the Ravens controlled the match limiting the Red Hawks to just .051 on the attack.
Benedictine came up big on the serve, finishing with 14 aces.
Terra led the attack with 10 kills, Scomazzon added 9, and Bridget O'Sullivan finished with 6. Scomazzon adding six aces and 11 digs, while Mya Schirk recorded five aces. VanCleave finished with 28 assists, 8 digs, 2 aces and 4 kills. Allison Kuebelbeck led the front-row defense with 4 blocks.
Benedictine 3, (8) Bellevue – 25–19, 25–23, 25–23
The Ravens wrapped up the Classic, handing the nationally-ranked Bruins their second loss of the season, It was the first loss at home for the Bruins since Aug, 24, 2024.
Despite suffering the straight sweep, the Bruins were able to match the Ravens with 41 kills while Benedictine hit .268.
The Ravens remained consistent throughout the sweep, hitting .294 in the first set, .220 in the second and .297 in the third.
Scomazzon finished with 16 kills on 33 attacks, 2 aces and 3 blocks. O'Sullivan was next with 9 kills, while Terra added 8 kills. VanCleave tallied 36 assists and collected 13 digs. DeMeulenaere led the back line with 15 digs while adding 4 aces. Kuebelbeck contributed four blocks.
The Ravens remain on the road for their next match, traveling to Wichita on Sept. 4, to take on Friends University at 6 p.m. before they return to the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium on Sept. 8 for their annual Mental Health Awareness Match against Avila University.
