Ravens Volleyball won its sixth-straight match on Saturday.
The Ravens defeated the MidAmerica Nazarene University Pioneers, 3-1, closing out a 2-0 weekend to open conference play after beating Park University on Friday night.
The Ravens lost a tight first set, 27-25, as neither team led by more than 3 points at any time in the set.Â
A JoJo Vander Woude kill tied the set at 22-22 but the Pioneers scored twice to get within 1 point of the win. The Ravens answered with a kill from Bridget O'Sullivan and then the Pioneers had two-straight attack errors to give the Ravens a 25-24 lead. However, MNU scored 3-straight to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Ravens answered in a big way, winning the second set 25-16 to level the match, 1-1.
The home side jumped out early, taking leads of 7-1, 15-6, and 19-8. The Pioneers chipped away at the lead a bit, but the Ravens built up too much of a cushion and won the set by 9 points.
The third set closely resembled the match's opening set as the two teams battled back and forth, but this time the Ravens won 26-24.. MNU held a 15-14 lead, but the Ravens answered with 3-straight points to move in front, 17-15.Â
The teams traded leads with the Pioneers taking a 24-23 lead and were just 1 point from winning the set.Â
However, the Ravens scored 3-straight to win the set with help from a Pioneer attack error, then back-to-back kills by Stefania Scomazzon to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Ravens continued their momentum into the fourth set, winning 25-8, and winning the match 3-1.
The Ravens jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the final set, and later scored the final 4 points of the match on the serve of Ava Penuel, including kills from Scomazzon and Vander Woude, and 2 aces from Penuel.
Scomazzon had 25 kills to lead the Ravens, Barbara Terra had 13, Vander Woude had 10, and O'Sullivan added 8 kills. Wren VanCleave finished with 52 assists.
The Ravens had 10 aces: Scomazzon with 5, Penuel with 3 and Isabella Franco had 2. Allison Kuebelbeck had 5 block assists to lead the team.
Benedictine 3, Park 1
PARKVILLE, Mo. – Friday night, the Ravens opened up Heart play with a 3-1 win over Park University on the road.
The Ravens won the first two sets before dropping the third before eventually winning 25-23 in the fourth to earn the win over the Pirates.
Scomazzon led the attack with 20 kills and a .300 attack percentage. As a team, the Ravens finished with a total of 44 kills as Terra, Vander Woude and Bridget O'Sullivan rounded on the hitters with 7, 6 and 5 kills respectively.
VanCleave finished with 37 of the Ravens 41 assists while also adding 16 digs defensively. Penuel led the Ravens with 19 digs while Vander Woude finished with 2 block assists.
The Ravens (10-2, 2-0 Heart) will remain at home for a 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15 contest against Baker University.
