Volleyball opens LaQuinta-KWU Volleyball Invitational with two wins

SALINA – The Raven Volleyball team took to the road for the first time this season Saturday for four matches in the 2016 LaQuinta-KWU Volleyball Invitational at Kansas Wesleyan University.

Benedictine opened played with two wins, the first a 3-0 win over Southwestern College and the second a 3-1 win over Tabor College.

In the opener over Southwestern, the Ravens earned a 25-19, 25-21, 25-15 win.

As a team, the Ravens recorded 40 kills. Sara Rahmanzai led the attack with 10 kills while McKenzie Craft was close behind with nine.

Christel Haack anchored the attack with 17 assists while Taylor Garner and Abby Brown finished with eight and seven assists respectively.

Defensively, Brown led the back line with 16 digs while Haley Cochran finished with 12. At the net, the Ravens tallied 12 block assists. Kraft finished with three while Maria Lanciotti, Camila Araujo, Rahmanzai and Elise Fulcher each added two.

In their Saturday finale, the Ravens took the first set 25-21 before Tabor pulled even with a 25-15 set two win. Benedictine took the next two sets, 25-20 and 27-29 to earn the match win.

Araujo led the offensive attack with 13 kills as the Ravens finished with a total of 47 kills.

Haack finished with 16 assists while Garner added 14.

Defensively, Brown led the back row again with 16 digs. Haack added 12 digs while Cochran finished with 10. Fulcher finished with three solo blocks and one block assists.

The Ravens return to action today for matches with Texas Wesleyan University and Kansas Wesleyan.
