Playing in their sixth straight Heart Tournament Championship match at the BC Soccer Complex, the No. 9-ranked Benedictine Women's Soccer team earned their fifth straight tournament title on Friday night with a 1-0 win over Central Methodist University.
Benedictine (18-1-2) scored during the ninth minute of play and then stepped up their defensive intensity to earn the shutout over CMU (16-7-0).
The lone goal of the match came off a deflection. Maisy Louree crossed a ball into the box that was deflected by a Central Methodist defender. With the ball bouncing free, Olivia Meyers stepped up and put a shot through the upper 90 over the outstretched arms of Eagles keeper Ashlynn Freeman.
Meyers' goal proved to be enough as the two teams played a balanced game for the final 81 minutes of action.
Both Freeman and Benedictine keeper Ashley Rehagen tallied eight saves with Rehagen securing five of her eight in the second half.
The Ravens finished with a slight advantage in shots, 14-12, and finished with nine shots on goal to the Eagles eight. Meyers paced the offense with five shots, four on goal, while Kayla Deaver and Anika Kallash finished with four shots each for Central Methodist.
Both Benedictine and Central Methodist had already earned automatic berths into the 2018 NAIA Women's Soccer National Tournament before the match and now they wait for to learn their Opening Round opponents.
The NAIA will announce the Tournament field on Monday at 11 a.m. on their Facebook page.
