OSKALOOSA, Iowa – No. 4 William Penn Univesity held off several runs by the No. 9 Raven Men's Basketball team on Saturday, but in the end, the Statesmen did what they needed to as they earned an 84-58 win over the Ravens.
Benedictine took over the lead for a stretch of roughly three minutes during the middle of the first half. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Tyson Cathy erased the Ravens deficit that pushed the Ravens to their six-point advantage and forced a timeout by William Penn with 12:02 left in the first half. The game went back and forth until a 3-pointer from Chris Jackson and a pair of free throws from Hunter Schneider allowed the Ravens to build their lead back to five.
William Penn closed out the first half outscoring Benedictine 17-6 to take a six-point lead into halftime. It was a lead they never gave back. An old-fashion 3-point play by Jaiden Bristol pulled the Ravens back within four points, 43-39, with 14:01 left to play but that was all the closer the Ravens were able to get.
Cathy finished with 14 points and 9 rebounds to lead the Ravens in scoring while Jayden Temme added 10 points. After shooting 40.7 percent from the floor in the first half, the Ravens cooled to 31.3 in the second half as they finished at 35.6. The Statesmen had three players in double figures and after being held to 28.9 in the first half, they heated up to 47.2 in the second half to pull away from the Ravens.
Benedictine returns home on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game with Baker University inside the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium on Dugan Jones Court. Wednesday marks the annual Season Ticket Holder Appreciation Night as the Ravens play their first Heart game at home. Don't miss out on the chance to watch the Ravens play at home this next week as your next chance won't come again until Dec. 7.
