OSKALOOSA, Iowa – The Raven Women's Basketball team matched (25) William Penn University point for point in the second half on Saturday but could not overcome a five-point second quarter as the Statesmen snapped the Ravens winning streak at five with a 54-45 win.
William Penn (3-1, 1-0 Heart) outscored Benedictine (5-1, 0-1 Heart) 12-5 in the second quarter to take a 26-17 lead into halftime and then made that lead stand over the final 20 minutes of play.
William Penn led by as much as 16 points early in the fourth quarter before Benedictine pulled back within five after a pair of free throws from Sklar Washington with just under two minutes left to play. William Penn connected on 6 of 9 from the free-throw line over the final minute of the game while holding the Ravens to just free throws over the same stretch to earn the win.
Washington led the Ravens with 13 points while Kayla Staley added 7. Both players did their scoring off the bench which allowed the Ravens to finish with a 31-10 advantage off the bench.
While the Statesmen finished shooting over 40 percent from the field and beyond the 3-point arc, they were forced into 20 turnovers. The Ravens took full advantage as they finished with 21 points off turnovers.
The Ravens play their Heart home opener on Wednesday as they host a 5:30 p.m. game on Dugan Jones Court inside the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium.
