Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Defense fuels Women's Basketball in win over rival Baker

High intensity on the defensive end carried Women's Basketball past the Baker Wildcats Wednesday night in the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium.

The Ravens (6-1, 1-1 Heart of America) handed the Wildcats (4-1, 1-1) their first loss of the season in convincing fashion, winning 68-53.

A late third-quarter run pushed the Ravens in front by 16 going into the final quarter. The Ravens held that comfortable advantage for the final 10 minutes, thanks to a swarming defense that never let the Wildcats get comfortable on the offensive end.

The Ravens forced 23 turnovers and held the Wildcats to 28.6 percent shooting from the floor. Kayla Staley had a double-double for the Ravens, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds; the Ravens held a 51-33 rebound advantage in the game. Joining Staley in double figures were Grace Brzozowski and LaRanda Thomas, who each scored 11 points.

The depth of the Ravens was evident as 10 different players recorded at least 10 minutes of playing time.

The Ravens carried a 29-23 lead into the halftime break but actually held a double-digit lead twice in the second quarter. Baker scored the final two buckets of the half to pull within 6 points, though. Neither team took good care of the ball in the first half – the Ravens had 12 turnovers while forcing 13 Baker turnovers.

The Ravens pulled down 26 rebounds in the first half, compared to 18 for the Wildcats, which included an 8-2 advantage on the offensive boards.

The Ravens held their lead for the entire third quarter, going up by 12 early in the quarter before the Wildcats chipped away at the deficit again. However, a 12-3 run by the Ravens gave them a 51-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter that they wouldn't relinquish.

The Ravens hit the road for their next conference battle. They'll play Mount Mercy University on Nov. 23.
