Softball wins twice on day two of #HeartSB Championship to advance in consolation bracket

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Facing elimination from the Heart Championship Series, the Raven Softball team won a pair of games in the consolation bracket on Thursday to keep their season alive.

Benedictine ended MNU's season in their first game of the day with a 7-6 win in eight innings before ending the season for Culver-Stockton College with a 5-2 win.

Against MNU, the Ravens earned a walk-off win over the Pioneers. Alex Burris led the eighth off with a single that was followed by a flyout and a single by Blair Shanks. Tiffany Ray drove in Burris with a double to advance the Ravens in the consolation bracket.

Alex Gilham earned the win in relief of Erin Ziebarth. Ziebarth threw the first six and two-thirds giving up five earned runs off nine hits before Gilham entered the finish off the final inning and one-third to hold the Pioneers scoreless off just one hit.

Benedictine held a 13-10 advantage over MNU in hits with Ray recording two doubles. Sarah Methvin went 3 for 4 with two RBI and a run while Burris finished with two hits and three runs scored.

In their game with Culver-Stockton, Gilham earned the start. She threw the first four innings before Alicia Armijo and Ziebarth finished off the game. Gilham earned the win while Ziebarth picked up the save throwing the final two innings as she held the Wildcats scoreless off two hits.

At the plate, Methvin and Shanks each tallied a double. Shanks went 2 for 3 with three RBI and a run scored. Methvin and Hyde accounted for the Ravens two remaining RBI while Burris scored twice.

With the win, the Ravens picked up their 28th win on the season to set a new record for single-season wins passing the 27 from the 2018 and 2008 seasons. The Ravens return to Busse Field for a third consolation game at 2:30 today as they take on tournament hosts Mount Mercy as they look to keep their season alive.
