Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

(RV) Women's Basketball drops first home game to (RV) MNU

A dominant first half by the (RV) MidAmerica Nazarene University Pioneers was too much for Women's Basketball to overcome on Saturday.

The Pioneers won 76-63, handing the (RV) Ravens their first home loss of the 2019-20 season.

MNU's hot shooting started early as they doubled-up the Ravens to take a 26-13 lead after the game's opening 10 minutes. MNU connected on four 3-pointers in the first quarter to help build their lead.

The Pioneers entered the contest averaging eight made 3-pointers per game while shooting 33 percent from deep. They eclipsed that mark in the first half, converting 9-of-15 to help them take a 48-30 lead into halftime. Conversely, the Ravens missed all seven attempts from deep in the opening half.

MNU shot 62.1 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes. The Ravens were shooting just 28 percent after one quarter of play but raised that to 36.1 by halftime thanks to a commitment to getting the ball in the paint. Ali Brzozowski led the Ravens with 10 points at half.

The Pioneers tacked on another point to their lead after the third quarter, taking a 65-46 advantage to the final frame.

Skylar Washington finally knocked down the Ravens first 3-pointer of the game at the 9:15 mark in the fourth quarter. That helped spark an 11-1 run that trimmed the Ravens 22-point deficit down to 12. However, Washington's trey was the only basket from deep for the Ravens and the Pioneers didn't allow the Ravens to make up any more ground as they closed out the 13-point win.

Kayla Staley had a team-high 20 points for the Ravens while also pulling down eight rebounds. Brzozowski finished with 12 points, the only other Ravens player in double-figures.

The Ravens shot 46.2 percent from the field in the second half, better than MNU's 37.9, but the first-half deficit proved to be too much.

The Ravens (13-5, 7-5 Heart) will hit the road for a mid-week game at Baker University on Jan. 22. They'll return to the Nolan Gymnasium for a 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25 game against (RV) William Penn.
