Women's Soccer used strong defense and a timely offensive connection to pick up a home win Wednesday night.
The Ravens topped the Grand View University Vikings 1-0 at Legacy Field.
The Ravens broke the scoreless tie with 14:35 left in the match. On the left side of the box, Nicole Patterson slipped a pass to the middle and Paulina Carles beat Grand View's Celenka Hommel for the goal and a 1-0 Ravens lead.
Ravens keeper Olivia Berry came up huge with just under 25 minutes. The Vikings had two straight opportunities in the box, but Berry turned away both point-blank shots to keep Grand View off the board. That set up what turned out to be Carles' game-winner 9 minutes later.
Both teams finished with five shots on goal, but Berry's efforts in goal made the lone Ravens goal stand up.
Neither team was able to put much offense forward in the first half. Both the Ravens and Vikings had two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes, but neither keeper was seriously tested.
The game was played cleanly as the teams were whistled for a total of 12 fouls: seven for Grand View and five for the Ravens.
The Ravens (3-1) remain home for their next match, a 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3 against Evangel University.
