Baseball earns series wins over Southwestern with Sunday sweep

The Raven Baseball team wrapped up the weekend on Sunday with a sweep over Southwestern College as they opened their home schedule with a 4-0 start against the Moundbuilders.

Benedictine (4-3) swept the Sunday doubleheader over Southwestern taking game one 6-4 before earning the series sweep in game two with a 7-1 win.

In Sunday's opener, Mark Hartley earned the start for the Ravens. He threw five innings, giving up four earned runs with eight strikeouts before giving way to Jacob Curry and Ben Hankammer. Curry and Hankammer held Southwestern scoreless combining for three strikeouts with Hankammer earning the save.

At the plate, the Ravens struck first with a four-run first inning before the Moundbuilders scored four unanswered to tie the game heading into the bottom of the fourth. Benedictine answered the Southwestern three-run fourth with a run of their own and then added an insurance run in the sixth to earn the win.

Michael Slaten and Brandon Van Beceleare both went 2 for 3 at the plate with Van Beceleare recording a double and two RBI. Drew Piontek and Daryl Myers accounted for an RBI each to wrap up the Ravens efforts at the plate in game one.

In game two, the Ravens got their first complete game of the season on the hill. Making his second appearance and his first collegiate start, Matthew Gephardt threw all seven innings to earn the win in game two. Gephardt gave up one run off six hits with three strikeouts over seven innings on just 80 pitches.

At the plate, the Ravens finished with nine hits, three for extra bases. Myers, Danny Favazza, and Jackson Doherty finished with two hits each. Favazza and Doherty each recorded doubles while Drew Piontek added a solo home run. On the bases, the Ravens finished with eight stolen bases by Doherty, Favazza (2), Jacob Pavlyak (3) and Myers (2).

The Ravens remain at home on Tuesday, taking on Ottawa University at 2 p.m.
