Softball splits season-opening doubleheader against University of St. Mary

LEAVENWORTH – The Raven Softball team opened their season with a split on Tuesday as they took on the University of St. Mary.

Benedictine won the first game of the doubleheader 10-2 before USM rallied to earn the split with a game two win, 5-3.

Originally scheduled to be the Ravens home opener, the doubleheader was moved to St. Mary due to field conditions at the BC Softball Field.

In game one, Alex Gilham went the distance for the Ravens inside the circle. She gave up two runs off five hits over six innings with three strikeouts to earn the win.

At the plate, the Ravens scored their 10 runs off nine hits, three of which were for extra bases. Faith Harding went 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBI while Megan Medhus and Blair Shanks each added a double. Shanks also added two RBI while Molly Chevalier, Lenae Salinas, Natalie Sheffield, Halley Rindom and Medhus finished with an RBI each.

In game two, Alicia Armijo earned the start inside the circle. Seh also went the distance, throwing six innings, but suffered the loss. Armijo finished with our strikeouts while giving up five runs off 10 hits.

At the plate, the Ravens were held to just two hits. Shanks finished the game going 2 for 4 at the plate as she connected on a solo home run. Chevalier drove in the Ravens remaining run that was scored by Sheffield.

The Ravens are scheduled to play at home Saturday against Kansas Wesleyan, but the weather moving into the area today will likely force that doubleheader to be moved as well. Check back to ravenathletics.com for schedule changes as well as through our social media on Facebook and Twitter.
