The Raven Baseball team took on University of St. Mary on Laughlin Field at Olsen Stadium for the second time in two days on Monday afternoon.
After picking up a seven-run win over the Spires on Sunday, the Ravens needed some late-inning heroics on Monday to earn an 11-10 win.
After falling behind early 5-2, the Ravens rallied to take their first lead of the game with a two-run second and third inning. The Spires responded with a three-run fifth and added another run in the sixth to take a 9-7 lead over the Ravens. With two outs, Austin Watamaniuk drew a walk that was followed by a ground-rule double off the bat of Michael Slaten. Drew Piontek stepped up to the plate and belted his second home run of the season to drive in three runs and put the Ravens in front for good.
Dillon Elliot earned the win for the Ravens in relief as Benedictine combined to send seven pitchers to the hill. Elliot threw one and two-thirds innings before handing the ball to Jacob Curry who finished the final two and one-third innings to earn the save. Curry gave up one run off one hit but was helped by a sac-bunt from Nathan Huber in the bottom of the seventh that gave the Ravens a two-run lead.
Michael Slaten went 4 for 5 with three runs scored and two doubles. Piontek finished with five RBI as he went 2 for 4. Brandon Barringer and Jacob Pavlyak added doubles while Jordan Williams connected on his first home run of the season to finish with two RBI. The Ravens also finished with five stolen bases as Michael Slaten recorded two with Garrett Romero, Jackson Doherty and Watamaniuk adding one each.
The Ravens return to Laughlin Field at Olsen Stadium at 1 p.m. Tuesday as they host the Dordt University Defenders in a doubleheader. The Tuesday doubleheader was added to the schedule over the weekend after the Ravens lost out on a pair of games originally scheduled against (RV) Concordia University. Tuesday's games will be the season-opener for Dordt.
