Fourth-quarter push not enough for Women's Basketball in 57-50 loss to (RV) MNU

OLATHE – (RV) MNU outscored the Raven Women's Basketball team by 10 points in the third quarter on Wednesday night and that proved to be the difference as the Ravens fell 57-50.

Benedictine (17-12, 11-12 Heart) outscored MNU (16-10, 15-8 Heart) 37-34 over the remaining three quarters but couldn't overcome their third-quarter deficit in the end.

Trailing by 10 points with 2:32 left to play, the Ravens outscored the Pioneers 6-3 down the stretch. LaRanda Thomas made a pair of free throws with 2 seconds remaining to pull the Ravens within five points but that was all the closer they would get as the Pioneers were able to seal the win by from the free throw line five seconds later.

The two teams combined for 12 points in the first quarter of play as the game played through four lead changes and four ties in the first five minutes of the game. The game went into the second quarter tied and a pair of free throws by MNU allowed the Pioneers to take 24-23 lead into halftime.

MNU opened the second half with a 14-2 run that pushed their one-point halftime lead to a 13-point advantage with six minutes left in the third quarter. The two teams matched each other with 11 points each to wrap up the third quarter, which allowed the Pioneers to take an 11-point lead into the fourth.

Thomas finished with 10 points and was the only Raven in double figures. Natalie Smaron added 8 points off the bench as the Ravens finished with a 22-10 advantage in bench scoring.

Benedictine wraps up the regular season at 2 p.m. on Saturday as they host (8) Central Methodist University. Heading into the final game of the regular season, the Ravens are currently sitting in the eighth spot in the Heart standings with a one-game lead over Peru State College.
