The Raven Women's Basketball team held (8) Central Methodist University to 66 points on Saturday afternoon as the two programs squared off in their regular-season finales.
While it was just the third time all season the Eagles had been held under 70 points, a fourth-quarter push by Benedictine was not enough as CMUY held on for a 66-59 win.
After playing to a near deadlock after the first quarter, CMU was able to pull ahead of Benedictine by halftime. The Eagles held the Ravens to just eight second-quarter points as they built a 30-22 lead at the break.
CMU came out of the break clicking offensively. They pushed their lead to 13 points inside the first two minutes of the third quarter. The Eagles shot over 60 percent from the field while sinking four of their six second-half 3-pointers as they pulled ahead by as much 19.
Trailing by 22 early in the fourth quarter, the Ravens settled in offensively and gradually started chipping away at their deficit. They cutoff CMU on the glass as they outscored the Eagles 23-11 in the fourth quarter to close the final game to single digits.
In their first meeting of the season, the Ravens outrebounded the Eagles by six. Saturday, the Ravens pulled in 50 rebounds and held a 20 rebound advantage over the Eagles. They connected on 11 of 13 free throws in the second half, hitting 6 of 7 in the fourth quarter as they were able to cut way at the Eagles' lead.
Rachael Baumgartner led the Ravens with 12 points as she went 6 of 8 at the free throw line. Grace Brzozowski added 10 points while Kayla Staley led the team with 10 rebounds. Benedictine finished with a 28-22 scoring advantage in the paint and also scored 9 second-chance points as they pulled in 19 offensive rebounds.
With the conclusion of the regular season today, the Ravens have earned the No. 8 seed in the 2020 Heart Postseason Tournament. They will travel to Fayette to take on top-seeded Central Methodist on Wednesday, March 4. Check back to www.ravenathletics.com for updates on a start time.
