Baseball earns two wins in home debut against Southwestern (Kan.) College

The Raven Baseball team made their 2020 home debut on Saturday as they hosted a non-conference doubleheader against Southwestern (Kan.) Collge.

Benedictine (2-3) took the doubleheader with a rally in the opener, 5-3, before earning a 7-1 win in game two.

Michael Kruse threw six innings in the opener for the Ravens finishing with three strikeouts while giving up five hits. All three runs scored by the Moundbuilders were unearned. Jacob Curry entered in relief in the seventh to earn the save on 13 pitches.

After scoring first, the Ravens fell behind 3-2 with Southwestern scored three runs in the second inning. Benedictine tied the game at 3-3 when Jacob Pavlyak grounded out to score Daryl Myers. The game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth when the Ravens scored on a wild pitch and balk from Southwestern reliever Jason Bray.

Myers finished the game with a triple while Drew Piontek and Jordan Williams added a double and RBI each.

Jacob Slaten took to the hill in the second game, throwing five innings. He gave up one run off two hits with eight strikeouts and got plenty of run support at the plate. Myers connected on a three-run home run that led to a four-run third inning for the Ravens, which proved to be enough to earn the win.

Jacob Slaten combined with Isaac Rudolph and Ben Hankammer to hold the Moundbuilders scoreless over the final four innings of the game.

Michael Slaten added a home run in the sixth while Jackson Doherty and Austin Watamaniuk each recorded doubles. Watamaniuk also finished with two RBI.

The Ravens and the Moundbuilders wrap up their weekend series with a Noon doubleheader on Sunday. Both games will be streamed on BRSN. Live links can be found on the Baseball Schedule page at http://www.ravenathletics.com/schedule/0/3.php.
