KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The (2) Raven Women's Lacrosse team needed extra time on Saturday to pick up their first win of the season.
Tied at 11-11 against NCAA Div. II Rockhurst University, Benedictine scored with just over two minutes left in the first overtime period to earn the win.
Natale Wechter capped off a four-goal game on an assist from Clare Ryan with 2:17 remaining in overtime to give the Ravens the one-goal win.
After scoring the games' opening goal, the Ravens quickly found themselves on the wrong side of a 5-1 score. Goals by Wechter and Mary McEnerney cut the Ravens deficit down but the Hawks answered in the final seconds to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.
After giving up two goals – with their four sandwiched between – inside the first five minutes of the second half, Benedictine rattled off five straight goals to pull even at 8-8 with just over 15 minutes remaining in the game. Kacey Moore gave the Ravens their first lead of the game to cap off the scoring run for Benedictine. From there, the two teams traded the lead with Rockhurst scoring with one minute remaining in regulation to tie the game at 11-11.
Rockhurst finished with a 32-30 advantage in shots with Benedictine recording the only shot in the overtime period. The Ravens finished with an 18-7 advantage in draw controls, but couldn't avoid the turnover as the Hawks forced the Ravens into 34 – only 11 of which were credited as caused turnovers.
Wechter led the Ravens in scoring with four followed by Moore with three. Anne Marie Mannella added two while Mary McEnerney, Aiden McEnerney, and Clare Ryan added one each. Moore led the team with three assists while Ryan added two. Wechter and Aiden McEnerney were credited with an assist each.
Taryn St. Louis finished with 13 saves as she played over 63 minutes in goal for the Ravens. Molly Muehlbach led the defensive with three caused turnovers while Moore added two.
Benedictine is off until Feb. 29 when they will travel to Marshall, Mo., to open KCAC play against Missouri Valley College. They will play eight games in March with their home opener on March 16 against another NCAA Div. II opponent, the Fort Lewis College Seahawks out of Durango, Colo.
