Ravens Volleyball dropped a three-set match to a stiff opponent Friday night.
The Ravens lost 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-19) to the (24) Grand View University Vikings.
The Ravens battled the Vikings throughout the opening set, falling just short as the visitors won 25-22. The Vikings maintained a 1 or 2 point lead in the opening moments of the set before the Ravens took the lead, 14-13, on a Mary Pat Taylor kill. Grand View responded with a 7-2 run. That's when the Ravens bounced back with 3-straight points to close the deficit to 20-19. The Vikings were able to close out the opening-set win, though, taking a 1-0 lead in the match.
Haylie Dickerson led the Ravens with 7 kills in the opening set, recording a .500 hit percentage. Marea Wortmann had 14 assists in the first set and the Ravens had a team hit percentage of .170.
The Vikings came out hot in the second set, building a quick 7-3 lead. After an early Ravens timeout, the home side chipped into the Grand View lead and erased most of the deficit, trailing by 1 point at 10-9. However, the Vikings maintained a lead the entire set and went on to win 25-19, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Ravens started strong in the third set, taking a quick 7-5 lead, but the Vikings answered in a big way. Grand View turned a 2-point deficit into a 15-9 lead thanks to a 10-2 run. The Ravens were unable to counter the visitors' punch, losing the third and final set, 25-19.
Dickerson's 12 kills led the way as she had a .261 hit percentage in the match. Regan Bruggeman added 9 kills and 5 digs, Katarina Vojvodic recorded 8 kills and 4 digs, and Taylor had 7 kills, 5 digs, and an ace. Wortmann finished the match with 35 assists, 9 digs, and 2 aces, and Hailey Folkers also notched 2 aces for the Ravens. As a team, the Ravens had a .143 hit percentage while the Vikings recorded a .309 hit percentage. The Ravens actually had more kills than Grand View in the match, 42 to 37, but the Vikings had 10 blocks and the Ravens were without a block in the match.
The Vikings have been a thorn in the side of the Ravens since joining the Heart of America Conference as the Ravens are winless against Grand View, having not taken a set against GVU since the 2017 season.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Ravens (13-12, 8-7 Heart) as they host William Penn University at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23 in the Ralph Nolan Gym as part of Homecoming Weekend.
