Men's Basketball continued a strong start to the season on Saturday night, earning a 90-76 win over Briar Cliff University inside the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium in their home opener.
After opening the season with 10 3-pointers and shooting over 62 percent from beyond the arc in their opener earlier in the week, the Ravens connected on 7 of 14 on Saturday as they scored 48 points in the paint while shooting 68.6 from the floor in their 14-point win.
The Ravens opened the game with seven straight points as Eric Krus, Jaiden Bristol and Matt Austin started out the scoring for Benedictine. A 3-pointer from Austin with around 14 minutes remaining in the half pushed the Ravens to their first double-digit lead of the game. Briar Cliff cut the lead down to four points nearly halfway through the have before the Ravens closed the half outscoring the Chargers 31-20 to take a 15-point lead, 49-34, into halftime.
As the second half got underway, Briar Cliff was able to cut the Benedictine lead down to 9 points twice but that was all the closer they would get. A 3-pointer from Nysir Scott followed by a basket in the paint from Tyson Cathy gave the Ravens their largest lead of the game at 23 points with 10:31 remaining.
Briar Cliff didn't go away, but Benedictine was able to keep them at arm's length as they moved on to the 14-point win.
Five Ravens reached double figures in scoring, led by the game-high 26 points from Austin. Krus added 13 points, moving his career total to 999, while Jayden Temme, Scott, and Cathy finished with 10 points each.
Benedictine held a 48-32 advantage in points in the paint while outscoring the Briar Cliff bench 24-13.
The Ravens remain at home on Monday night as they host Haskell Indian Nations at 7 p.m. before hitting the road for a pair of games at the Cattle Classic in Seward, Neb., on Nov. 5-6.
