Men's Soccer lost a heartbreaker to start Heart of America play on Wednesday.
The Ravens dropped a 2-1 contest in overtime at home to the MidAmerica Nazarene University Pioneers.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the (22) Pioneers caught the Ravens off-balance in the 2nd minute of the second overtime period. A quick throw-in and then a long pass forward found Nicolas Theberge for the game-winning goal.
The first half was a defensive struggle as the Ravens and Pioneers entered the halftime break scoreless.
The Ravens had 6 shots, 2 on goal, in the opening 45 minutes while holding the Pioneers to 5 shots, but none on goal. MNU did draw four corner kicks but wasn't able to get anything on frame. The Ravens didn't have a corner kick in the first half.
The Pioneers broke the tie early in the second half. Rick Hovinga found himself behind the Ravens backline for a goal and was originally whistled for being offside. However, the referee met with his assistant on the sideline and determined the goal was good.
Girma Kassa brought the game back level just 2 minutes later. Daniel Wee slipped Kassa a pass and the forward one-touched it past the MNU keeper to tie the game at 1-1.
Neither team was able to find another goal the remainder of the second half, heading into overtime with the score level, 1-1. After the initial 10-minute extra period, the Pioneers ended the contest early in the second extra period.
The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Ravens (3-3, 0-1 Heart).
Each team recorded 10 shots with 3 of those shots coming on goal.
The Ravens will remain home for their next contest, a 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18 contest against Culver-Stockton College.
