SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Briar Cliff University needed overtime on Saturday to beat Men's Basketball.
Benedictine erased a 17-point halftime deficit by outscoring Briar Cliff 40-23 to force overtime. The Chargers outscored the Ravens 13-6 in the overtime period to hang on for a 74-67 win.
Briar Cliff held Benedictine without a 3-pointer in the first half while shooting over 43 percent from the field with 8 3-pointers. The Chargers used a 12-2 run at the start of the game to build a double-digit lead. Back-to-back baskets by Sam Ungashick and Preston Reynolds with just over 6 minutes left in the half cut Benedictine's deficit down to 9 points only to have Briar Cliff close out the half outscoring the Ravens 12-7 down the stretch to take a 38-21 halftime lead.
The Ravens opened the second half outscoring the Chargers 23-9 to close within 3 points midway through the second half. Ungashick scored 5 straight for the Ravens to give them their first lead of the game with just under 3 minutes remaining in regulation. Benedictine maintained their lead until the final second of regulation when Briar Cliff hit a pair of free throws to tie the game and force overtime.
Benedictine's overtime points came from Ahmad Louis, Tyson Cathy, and Ungashick with Louis and Ungashick hitting a pair of free throws.
Braden Belt led the Ravens in scoring 16 while Ungashick added 15. Reynolds finished with 10 points while Cathy added 9 points and 9 rebounds.
Benedictine held Briar Cliff to just one 3-pointer in the second half and overtime. They won the advantage in the paint, outscoring Briar Cliff 40-24.
The Ravens open up Heart play on Saturday, Nov. 26 with a trip to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to take on Mount Mercy University at 2 p.m.
