OSKALOOSA, Iowa – Benedictine finished with 11 3-pointers, reaching double digits for the fourth time this season on Saturday as they took on No. 25 William Penn University at the Penn Gymnasium.
The Statesmen were able to match those 11 3-pointers while scoring 21 points off 18 turnovers by the Ravens as they earned a 75-67 win.
William Penn led early before a 3-pointer from Braden Belt tied the game at 5-45 inside the first two minutes of the game. Belt bit a pair of free throws a minute later to give Benedictine its first lead of the game.
The next 10 minutes of the game played through three ties and three lead changes. Benedictine led by as much as four before William Penn regained the lead for good with just under 9 minutes left before the half.
A 3-pointer from Anthony Hall pulled Benedictine back even with 24 seconds left in the half before William Penn converted a last-second dunk to take a 2-point lead into halftime.
William Penn came out in the second half and took over the game's momentum from the start. They built a double-digit lead over the Ravens who gradually chipped away pulling back within a possession, 65-63, on a 3-pointer from Belt with 5:26 remaining in the game.
It was Belt again three minutes later when he converted a layup to pull Benedictine within a point, 68-67. That was all the closer the Ravens would get as the Statesmen answered with a 3-pointer seconds later and then held Benedictine scoreless over the final two minutes of the game.
Belt led the Ravens with a game-high 22 points. He was joined in double figures by Jayden Temme with 10 points.
