Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball battles back from slow start, comeback falls short against CMU

Men's Basketball suffered a home loss Thursday night.

The Ravens fell to the Central Methodist University Eagles, 70-60, in the Ralph Nolan Gym.

The Ravens trailed by 9 points at halftime but were down 45-42 after a pull-up jumper by Jake Thompson with 10:32 to play. However, the Eagles answered with back-to-back 3-pointers and went on to maintain at least a 7-point lead the remainder of the game.

The loss is the fourth in a row for the Ravens as they drop to 13-10 on the season, and 7-7 in Heart of America play.

Matt Austin scored a game-high 22 points while also nabbing 3 steals. No other Ravens scored in double-digits, with Nysir Scott the second-leading scorer with 8 points.

The Ravens had 20 turnovers in the game, and the Eagles made 11-of-24 3-pointers, their most in conference play this season.

The first half was defined by scoring streaks. The Eagles opened the game on a 12-0 run, but the Ravens answered with their own 18-8 run to cut CMU's lead to 20-18. The Eagles closed the half with a 12-5 run to take a 32-23 lead into the halftime break, but neither team finished the half shooting the ball well. The Ravens didn't score in the final 3:34 of the half, and the Eagles were unable to score in the final 4:42 of the first half.

Matt Austin had a team-high 10 points for the Ravens in the opening half, hitting 2-of-4 shots from 3-point range.

With the loss, the Ravens lose ground in the bunched-up Heart South Division. Entering Thursday's game, the Ravens were tied with CMU, Park University, Baker University, and MidAmerica University for second place in the division, with all teams one game behind Evangel University.

The Ravens will try to rebound with a trip to Iowa for a game at Mount Mercy University on Saturday, Feb. 5.
