Baseball takes season-opening series with McPherson after Sunday sweep

After dropping their season opener on Saturday to McPherson College 20-6, Baseball bounced back on Sunday with a doubleheader sweep over the Bulldogs.

The Ravens took game one on Sunday 6-4 and wrapped up the series win with a 4-3 final in game two.

Saturday's opener saw the Ravens surrender 20 runs off 17 hits while committing three errors defensively. Andrew Baier suffered the loss, giving up six earned runs off four hits with two strikeouts over two and two-thirds. At the plate, the Ravens recorded eight hits. Jacob Slaten went 3 for 5 while Jacob Pavlyak and Jack Harpole each recorded doubles for the Ravens only extra-base hits on the day. Ian O'Malley rounded out the offensive effort with two RBIs.

Sunday saw two Raven debuts on the hill with O'Malley earning the start in game one and Nelson Klein in game two.

O'Malley threw into the fifth inning before giving up three runs when he was relieved by Cole Voss. Voss shut down the Bulldogs, giving up two hits against seven batters to earn the win. Slaten entered the game in the seventh and threw a scoreless inning to earn the save.

The Ravens finished the game with seven hits as Favazza recorded a double with an RBI. Pavlyak added two RBIs while Drew Piontek and Ashton Neuman added an RBI each.

Klein took a no-hitter into the fifth inning for the Ravens in the series finale. He finished his outing giving up two runs off two hits with three strikeouts while facing 10 batters before he was relieved by Matt Piontek and Slaten. Piontek threw a scoreless sixth before Slaten finished off the seventh inning to pick up his second save.

Drew Piontek recorded the Ravens first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth that gave the Ravens back the lead. Pavlyak and Slaten finished with two hits each while Favazza added a triple.

Benedictine heads out on the road on Feb. 11-12 for four games in Sterlington, La., in the second-annual Cajun Collision. The Ravens will take on (14) University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma and (3) Southeastern (Fla.) on Friday before wrapping up the trip on Saturday with games against Louisiana Christian and LSU-Alexandria.
