SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel University earned a Heart South series win over Raven Baseball over the weekend but couldn't pull off the sweep as Benedictine earned a Sunday split with the Valor.
Evangel earned wins of 10-4 and 8-3 on Saturday before taking game three on Sunday, 3-2. Benedictine won the final game of the series on Sunday, 10-5.
In the series finale, the Ravens jumped out to a 6-0 lead over the Valor, holding Evangel scoreless until the fourth inning. That was all the support that Luke Schmedding would need as he earned the win to move to 3-1 on the season. Schmedding went 5 innings, giving up 2 earned runs off 7 hits with 3 strikeouts.
Danny Favazza, Hunter Moffet, and Drew Piontek all recorded a double at the plate. Moffet finished with 4 RBI while Ian O'Malley added 2.
For the series, the Ravens posted an ERA of 6.84 as they allowed 19 earned runs off 33 hits. At the plate, the Ravens finished the series with a team average below .200 as they were limited to 21 hits in 107 at-bats.
Jacob Slaten finished the weekend hitting .556 with 5 hits and a double. Moffet hit .308 and was the only other Raven over .300 for the series. Piontek hit the Ravens lone home run of the series in game one of the series as he finished that game with 2 of the Ravens 4 RBI.
Nelson Klein suffered the loss in game three of the series on Sunday. He went four and two-thirds, giving up one earned run off 6 hits with 6 strikeouts. Andrew Baier suffered the game two loss, recording a series-high 7 strikeouts during his four and one-third innings of work.
The Ravens remain on the road for their next conference series, traveling to Parkville, Mo., on Saturday and Sunday for a four-game series against Park University.
