Men's Lacrosse entered their regular-season finale on Tuesday with the ability to control their own destiny. Benedictine needed a win over Ottawa University to secure the No. 2 seed in the KCAC Championship Tournament after William Penn beat Columbia (Mo.) earlier in the day.
The No. 8-ranked Ravens opened the game with seven straight goals and jumped out to a 9-1 advantage over the Braves en route to a 17-10 win. With the win, the Ravens finish the KCAC season at 8-2 and earn the No. 2 seed and a Quarterfinals bye with their head-to-head win over the Braves who also finished at 8-2 in KCAC play.
The two teams finished somewhat balanced in shots, with the Ravens holding a 50-48 advantage. The difference in the game came down to Benedictine's start. They held a 17-8 advantage in shots in the first quarter.
Benedictine led 10-3 at the break while the two teams finished the third and fourth quarters with seven goals each. The Braves cut their deficit down to five goals late in the third quarter, but a goal from Jordan Rodriguez, James Carson, and Michael Hogan scored late to push Benedictine back to a 13-7 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Benedictine added four goals in the fourth quarter, including goals from Aiden Richardson and Brady Guck to open the quarter.
Duncan Loud finished with 20 saves in goal as he earned the win. Benedictine finished the game with 13 caused turnovers as the Braves committed 26 turnovers. Carson Huerter and Connor Buckley led the defensive effort with 3 caused turnovers while Ben Schwartz, Hogan, and Rodriguez added 2 each.
Rodriguez and Hogan finished with 4 goals each while Guck and Richardson added 3 each. Carson, Curtis Wesley, and Sean Molyneux added one goal each to round out the Ravens scoring efforts.
The Semifinals of the KCAC Championship Tournament returns to Legacy Field on Thursday, April 21.
