Women's Soccer responded in a positive way at home Wednesday night.
The (22) Ravens controlled all 90 minutes of action on Legacy Field, defeating the University of Saint Mary Spires 5-0. The win comes after a road loss at (11) John Brown the previous Friday.
Early pressure paid off for the Ravens. After spending most of the first half in the Spires end, the Ravens notched the first goal of the game about 20 minutes into action. Riley Degner slid a pass across the face of the goal and Rachel Beffa was in the right place, knocking the pass into the net to put the Ravens up 1-0.
That lead doubled just two minutes later as Beffa sent a corner kick to the far side of the goal and Kourtney Koc connected with the pass to score.
With 17 minutes left in the half, Degner chased down a clear attempt by the Spires and blasted home a left-footed kick to put the Ravens up 3-0.
With 6 minutes to play before half, Meagan Papin threaded a beautiful forward ball from the back half and found Madalynn Gill who was able to score the Ravens fourth goal of the match.
At the sound of the halftime buzzer, the Ravens dominance in possession was evident, having outshot the Spires 19-0 in the first 45 minutes.
Emily Shephard fired home the Ravens only goal of the second half, a rocket that came on an assist from Papin following a short corner.
By the final whistle, the Ravens had 35 shots and 18 shots on goal compared to just 1 shot for the Spires. Olivia Berry and Mackenzie Korzenecki each played 45 minutes in goal for the Ravens, but neither was required to make a save.
The Ravens (2-1) hit the road for their next two contests. The first is at Columbia College on Saturday, Sept. 3 and then at Avila University on Wednesday, Sept. 7. They'll return home for their final non-conference tilt at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 against Concordia (Neb.).
