MARSHALL, Mo. – Men's Basketball earned an overtime win over Missouri Valley College on Monday as they won their second straight.
Missouri Valley led by 13 late in the first half and then again early in the second half only to see Benedictine score 41 points in the second half and finish overtime with a 15-13 advantage to earn the 77-75 win over the Vikings.
The first half was a low scoring one. Through the first-half media timeout, the teams were a combined 0 for 20 from beyond the arc as the Vikings held an 11-8 lead. Braden Belt made the first 3-pointer of the game to give Benedictine a 15-13 lead inside the final seven minutes of the half, only to have the Vikings answer with their first 3-pointer seconds later to regain the lead.
The Vikings used their 3-pointer to spark a run that allowed them to outscore the Ravens 16-5 over the remainder of the half to take a 10-point lead into the break.
Benedictine's largest deficit of the second half came inside the first two minutes of the period. Jayden Temme and Tyson Cathy combined to cut that double-figure deficit down to 5 two minutes later. The Ravens captured their first lead of the second half midway through the period on another 3-pointer from Belt.
That lead was short-lived as the Vikings were able to pull back ahead by as much as 5 twice before the Ravens used a 12-3 run to erase the Vikings lead and pull ahead 61-58 with just over three minutes remaining in the period. Benedictine remained in the lead until Jace Lance hit a 3-pointer to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Benedictine led from the start of the overtime. Another 3-pointer from Lance tied the game at 69 but the Ravens never gave up their lead as they earned their second overtime win of Heart play.
The Ravens were two points shy of their entire starting five finishing in double figures. Belt finished with 18, followed by Sam Ungashick with 14 – all of which came in the second half. Temme scored 14 while Cathy and Ahmad Louis added 9 points each.
Benedictine closes out its three-game road swing with a trip to Baldwin City on Thursday to take on Baker University as they open up the second half of the Heart schedule. The Wildcats earned a win over the Ravens inside the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium 68-53 back on Nov. 30.
