SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – No. 19 Evangel University scored 33 points off turnovers on Wednesday night as they earned the regular-season sweep over Men's Basketball.
The Valor forced the Ravens into 20 turnovers while committing just 10 of their own which led to a 27-point differential as Evangel earned an 85-70 win.
Braden Belt and Sam Ungashick gave Benedictine a 3-point lead inside the first two minutes of the game. They briefly gave that lead back to the Valor before building as much as a 6-point lead on a layup by Brycen LaRue. That lead came near the midpoint of the half before Evangel outscored Benedictine 23-9 over the remainder of the half to take a 7-point lead into the break.
After closing the half on an 8-1 run over the final 2:20 of the first half that run continued into the second half and was stopped at 14-1 when Belt connected on the Ravens first 3-pointer of the second half.
Belt's 3-pointer was the first of 9 second-half 3-pointers that would allow Benedictine to keep pace with Evangel.
Evangel was able to answer every run Benedictine made in the second half. Ungashick connected on a pair of free throws to cut the Ravens deficit to 5 points with four minutes remaining in the game. Another pair of free throws nearly a minute later from Jayden Temme kept the margin at 5 points.
Those five points were all the closer Benedictine would get as the Valor scored 10 straight to push their advantage out to 15 points and pull away for the win.
Belt finished with a game-high 20 points, followed by Temme with 12 points and 8 rebounds while Tyson Cathy added 10 points and 7 rebounds. Ungashick and Ahmad Louis added 9 points each to round out the Ravens top scorers.
Benedictine finished with a 38-29 advantage on the boards with 9 offensive rebounds that helped lead to a 14-9 advantage in second-chance scoring.
The Ravens return home on Saturday to host a 2 p.m. game with Mount Mercy University. The two teams opened up Heart play with each other back on Nov. 26 with Benedictine earning a 77-65 win.
