LEAVENWORTH – Baseball picked up their third win of the season on Wednesday with a 9th-inning home run to hold off a late-inning rally from the University of St. Mary.
USM tied the game at 8 with a 2-run eighth inning only to have Benedictine regain the lead on a 2-run home run from Tyler Marchand in the top of the 9th to earn a 10-8 win.
Benedictine broke open the game with a 6-run 3rd inning. Danny Favazza doubled to drive in Hunter Moffett and Brylan Haas. Chase Robertson doubled to drive in Favazza and Theo Kummer. Ashton Neuman scored on a passed ball and Zac Demos singled to score Robertson before the dust settled on the inning.
Neuman drew a lead-off walk in the 9th inning setting up the go-ahead home run for Marchand, who was pinch-hitting in the inning after defensive substitutions removed the designated hitter from the lineup.
Ethan Arnold pitched a scoreless bottom half of the inning and recorded two strikeouts to earn the save. Dominic Susanka earned the win in relief after Nelson Klein earned the start on the hill. Klein threw three and two-thirds with five strikeouts. Zach Wilcox threw the next three and one-third innings before Cole Voss and Susanka entered in relief.
Favazza went 3 for 5 at the plate while Robertson went 2 for 3 as the only Ravens with a multi-hit game in the win.
The Ravens return to Laughlin Field at Olsen Stadium for a Saturday doubleheader with Dordt University at Noon. The schedule has changed due to the forecasted cold temperatures in the region on Friday. The Ravens will not host their previously scheduled Friday doubleheader with the Defenders and could potentially host a second doubleheader with them on Monday – but that has not be determined at the time of this release.
