Game Recap: Softball |

Softball sweeps Vikings in home doubleheader

Softball picked up a pair of important wins at home Sunday, and also saw a familiar name move atop another program record.

The Ravens swept the Missouri Valley Vikings, taking Game 1 3-2, and then walking-off Game 2, 7-6.

Game 1

In the opener, Kera Willoughby outdueled the Vikings pitcher to earn her ninth win of the season. Willoughby pitched 6.1 innings, struck out two batters and gave up 2 runs. Lacey Foster came on for the final two outs to earn the save.

The Ravens took the lead in the bottom of the second when Clare Heitz scored on Ally Pickering's single. However, the Vikings grabbed the lead with 2 runs in the top of the fourth.

The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth when the Ravens rallied for 2 runs to take the lead.

Megan Medhus and Madison Zaccardo singled to start the inning. Medhus was later tagged out racing for home, but Hailey Burmeister (running for Zaccardo) scored on the throw to first base to tie the game. Chloe Strickland reached on a fielder's choice and then came around to score on an error by the Vikings in what turned out to be the winning run.

Game 2

The Ravens had to come from behind once again in the second game. After the Vikings scored in the top of the third, Halley Rindom scored on a MVC error in the bottom of the inning, then Medhus drilled a 2-run homer to give the Ravens a 3-1 lead. The home run launched Medhus to the No. 1 spot on the Ravens all-time hits leaderboard, passing Blair Shanks for first place. Medhus also passed Shanks for most career doubles earlier this season.

Missouri Valley plated a run in the top of the fourth to make it 3-2, but Medhus responded in a big way in the bottom of the fifth by blasting another 2-run homer to push the Ravens lead to 5-2.

The Vikings added to the drama in the sixth inning by scoring 2 runs, then with two outs in the seventh they scored 2 more to move in front 6-5.

Facing a 1-run deficit and a frustrating doubleheader split, the Ravens went to work right away in the bottom of the seventh. Medhus was hit by a pitch and Zaccardo walked to put the winning run on base. Strickland strode to the plate with 1 out and ripped a double to right-center field, scoring Medhus and Zaccardo for the walk-off winner.

Bailey Selvage got the start in the circle for the Ravens, going 4.1 innings. She was replaced by Foster for an inning and then Willoughby went the final 1.2 innings. Each of the Ravens pitchers gave up 2 runs.

With the wins, the Ravens improved to 24-21 overall and 14-8 in Heart Conference action, moving them into third place and in the Heart South – good position for the Heart Postseason Tournament.

The Ravens have four games remaining in the regular season: a 1 p.m. home doubleheader against Evangel on Friday, April 28, and a pair of away games at Central Methodist the following day.
