Women's Soccer shuts out Baker to advance in Heart Tournament

Women's Soccer advanced to the semifinals of the Heart Women's Soccer Championship with a win Tuesday night.

The No. 2-seed Ravens knocked off the No. 7-seed Baker University Wildcats, 1-0, to move on in the tournament.

The Ravens took a first-half lead thanks to a header by Caysi Brown in the 23rd minute. After the Ravens earned a corner kick, Christine Znidarsic sent the ball into the box to find Brown. The defender's header slipped between the Baker keeper's legs to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead. Brown also scored in the Ravens 2-0 win against the Wildcats in the regular season.

The Ravens continued to press the Wildcats defense the remainder of the first half, piling up 8 shots to Baker's 3, but went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Baker nearly leveled the score early in the second half, but a Wildcats header deflected off the crossbar, keeping the visitors scoreless.

The Ravens continued to look for an insurance goal, but it came down to solid goal keeping for the Ravens.

Mackenzie Korzenecki made her first great save with 17 minutes to play, punching a Wildcats shot over net. Korzenecki made a diving save later, and then made her final big play with just 2 minutes to play, punching another shot over the goal to earn the clean sheet and the Ravens win. Korzenecki finished the match with 4 saves.

Next up for the Ravens (13-5-1) will be a Friday, Nov. 8 match against No. 3-seed Central Methodist University. The Ravens defeated CMU 3-2 earlier in the season. Check www.ravenathletics.com for updates on Friday's match time.
