LEAVENWORTH – Men's Lacrosse opened their 2024 campaign on Monday night with a shutout over former conference opponent, the University of St. Mary.
Benedictine (1-0) scored 4 goals on their first 5 shots and never looked back as they earned a 20-0 win over the Spires. The shutout marked the program's first since shutting out the Spires in the 2023 season opener.
The first two goals of the season were both unassisted by Brayden Hope and Joseph Bianchi. That duo scored two more times on assists from Jordan Rodriguez and Liam Waldron before Mason Eberle capped off the first-quarter scoring with an assist credited to Mac Postel Jr.
By halftime, the Ravens tacked on four more goals to lead 10-0 at the intermission and then split 10 goals over the third and fourth quarters to secure the 20-point total.
Bianchi led the Ravens with 6 goals, Hope finished with 5 goals while Postel Jr. added 3. Rodriguez finished with 2 goals while Jacob Meyer and Joey Calabria joined Eberle with one goal each. Rodriguez led the Ravens with 3 assists, followed by Hope with 2. Postel Jr. and Waldron were joined by Charlie Louree with an assist each.
Benedictine outshot USM 49-12 while securing a total of 63 groundballs. Benedictine won 19 of 23 faceoffs with Max Thompson winning 16 of 20 to help set up the Ravens offense.
Defensively, John Paul Evans played the distance in goal, recording 5 saves. The Ravens finished with a total of 21 caused turnovers as the Spires finished with 35. Jack Northrup led the way with 5 caused turnovers while Charley McGlinn added 3.
The Ravens are off until Feb. 24 when they travel to Columbia, Mo., to take on No. 7 Madonna (Mich.) at Columbia College.
