(9) Women's Lacrosse opens season with 20-point effort against (RV) Ottawa

After being delayed a week due to weather preventing their scheduled road opponents from hosting them, No. 9 Benedictine Women's Lacrosse opened their season with a bang on Saturday afternoon on Legacy Field.

The Ravens scored 11 first-half goals en route to a 20-4 win over the (RV) Ottawa University to earn their first win of the season.

It was a pair of brand-new Ravens who combined for the first goal of the season as Alexa Hildenbrand scored off an assist from Elizabeth Pluta inside the first 90 seconds of the game.

Chanterra Allen scored four of the Ravens remaining five first-quarter goals as Benedictine jumped ahead of Ottawa. Kiera Russell added the remaining quarter goal as Margaux Gelbach, Christen Michaelides, and Haylee Stough assisted on the final three goals from Allen in the quarter.

Allen connected with Trough late in the second quarter on the Ravens 10th goal of the game kicking in the running clock.

After taking an 11-0 lead into the halftime break, the Ravens gave up two goals to start the third quarter before Strough and Pluta scored unassisted goals to push the Ravens lead back above 10 points.

The Ravens finished with a 48-13 advantage in shots with 30 shots on goal. 

Allen, Pluta, and Hildenbrand led the Ravens with 4 goals each. Russell and Gelbach added 3 goals each while Srough finished with 2. Hildenbrand led the Ravens with 4 assists, followed by Russell, Allen, and Gelbach with 2 while Michaelides, Pluta, and Strough added 1 assist each.

Gianna Stiletti earned the win in goal, playing the first half. She finished with three saves before giving way to Molly Owen who played the second half, also finishing with 3 saves.

Defensively, the Ravens finished with 12 caused turnovers as Gelbach led the way with 4. 

Russell recorded 5 of Benedictine's 12 draw controls while Gelbach finished with 3. Strough, Russell, and Stalletti led the Ravens with 3 ground balls each as they finished with 22.

Benedictine remains at home for their next two games, hosting University of St. Mary on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and wrapping up the week on Friday with Midland University at 4 p.m.
