Ravens Softball split a pair of games against the University of Saint Mary Spires at home on Tuesday.
The Ravens took Game 1, 4-1, before losing Game 2, 13-4.
Game 1
The Ravens won Tuesday's opener riding another strong start from Bailey Selvage. The sophomore pitcher tossed her fifth complete game of the season, striking out 12 Spires batters and allowing 3 hits, 1 walk and 1 hit. The only USM run came on a solo homer by the second batter of the game.
The Ravens did all their damage in the second inning. Rhiannon Martin singled through the middle of the infield to bring home Kera Willoughby. Ryan Cooper followed that up with another single to center field to score Clare Heitz. To top things off, Kassidy James doubled home Cooper and Martin. All 4 Ravens runs came with 2 outs.
Neither team was able to scratch across a run the remainder of the game as the Ravens rode the hot arm of Selvage to their 11th win of the season.
James and Willoughby led the Ravens hitters with 2 hits each. James added 2 RBIs.
Game 2
The Ravens six-game winning streak came to an end in Tuesday's second game. The Ravens took a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning when Heitz singled in Willoughby and then scored on a bunt by Cooper.
However, the Spires answered with 2 runs in the fifth inning to tie the game, then scored 5 runs in the sixth inning thanks in large part to four Ravens errors. USM capped off the day with a grand slam in the seventh inning to close out the scoring.
Willoughby pitched the first 5 innings for the Ravens. She gave up 8 hits and 5 runs, but only 2 earned runs. Abby Pressgrove came on in relief for the final 2 innings, giving up 8 runs – only 4 were earned as the Ravens committed six errors in the game.
Willoughby went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored 2 runs.
The Ravens (11-3) will remain home when they take on College of St. Mary (Neb.) for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 2 on Ravens Field.
