Ravens Volleyball started off conference play on the right foot Friday night.
The (RV) Ravens defeated the Grand View University Vikings in four sets, winning 3-1.
The Ravens jumped ahead quickly in Friday's deciding set, bolting out to a 5-1 lead. They continued to keep the Vikings at arm's length, holding leads of 14-9 and 20-14, then securing a 25-18 set win. The four-set win gave the Ravens a conference-opening victory as they start Heart of America play 1-0.
The Ravens opened the match with a win in the first set, but it wasn't without some intrigue. The Ravens built up leads of 19-15 and 23-17, but the Vikings went on a 6-1 run to pull within a point. However, the Ravens closed out the set with a kill to take the 25-23 set win and 1-0 match lead.
The momentum the Vikings began to build towards the end of the first set carried over into the second set as they pushed out to a 17-13 lead. However, after a timeout, the Ravens rattled off 4-straight points and a 10-4 run to take a 23-21 lead. The visitors answered and the teams traded points until the Ravens were finally able to secure a 28-26 win to move up 2-0 in the match.
The third set mirrored the first two sets as the two teams battled to the very end. After an early 8-4 lead by the Vikings, the Ravens charged back in front 12-10. From that point on, neither team led by more than 3 points the remainder of the set, sharing ties of 14-14, 17-17 and 20-20 before the Vikings built a 23-20 lead. The Ravens scored 2-straight to close it to 23-22, but Grand View closed out the set with a 25-22 win. However, the Ravens responded to take the match with a strong fourth set.
Winny Harris and Mahala Sewell shared the team-high with 13 kills, while Hokulani Sagapolu had 12 and Maura Lickteig had 11 kills. Cate Milroy notched 3 aces and the Ravens had 12 block assists. Marissa Mantz had 28 assists with Haley Cahill adding 21 assists.
The Ravens (10-3, 1-0 Heart) are right back in action hosting William Penn University at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21.
