Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball moves to 2-0 in Heart with sweep of Statesmen

Ravens Volleyball moved to 2-0 in conference play Saturday afternoon.

The (RV) Ravens swept the William Penn University Statesmen, 3-0.

The Ravens stormed out to a 1-0 lead in the match thanks to a dominant 25-13 first set. The Statesmen held an early lead but the Ravens answered to take a 12-10 lead and only got better from there. Penn took a timeout down 18-12 but the Ravens kept rolling, closing out the set with a 7-1 run after the timeout.

The Ravens won the second set, 25-18, to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Unlike the first set, it was the Ravens who took an early lead, pushing out to a 14-7 advantage to force a timeout by the Statesmen. There would be no momentum swing following the timeout, though, as Hokulani Sagapolu's block put the finishing touches on the 7-point win.

The third set proved to be more difficult for the Ravens, but they prevailed anyway. A Ravens timeout down 21-19 proved to be a difference-maker as a formation adjustment paved the way for a 6-2 Ravens run and 25-23 set win, securing the 3-0 sweep of the match.

Regan Bruggeman had a match-high 13 kills and she was joined in double-figures by Sagapolu, who had 10 kills and 2 aces. Winny Harris had 9 kills and was in on 5 blocks, and Mahala Sewell and Maura Lickteig each had 7 kills.

The Ravens finished with a hit percentage of .374 as a team with Lickteig (.600), Harris (.571) and Bruggeman (.429) leading the way.

Haley Cahill had 28 assists and an ace, and Marissa Mantz had 15 assists and a pair of aces.

The Ravens (11-3, 2-0 Heart) continue their homestand with Family Weekend matches coming up. They'll host Baker University at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27 and MidAmerica Nazarene University at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28.
